Biography
MA (Hons), LLB (Hons) Dip. Teaching. Barrister specialising in immigration and labour law.
Part of his legal studies undertaken at the International Court of Justice, The Hague (the World Court). Worked as a technical editor in Holland for 3 years, 1976-1979.
Former teacher. Taught 4 years in Otara, 1980-1984.
Lawyer for the Service Workers Union. Formed Union Law Centre in South Auckland 1989. Formerly Member of the Labour Party.
Secretary of the Otara Branch 1981-89. Left the party in 1989 and with Jim Anderton became a founding member and President of NewLabour.
Elected to Parliament in the 1996 general election. Appointed 1996-1999 as a member of the Justice and Law Reform select committee and the select committee for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade.
Re-elected to Parliament in 1999 and appointed to the Cabinet of the Clark-Anderton Government. Member of Cabinet Economic Development Committee, Cabinet Social Equity Committee, Cabinet External Relations and Defence Committee, and Cabinet Legislation Committee.
