Shipping industry review released
The report of the independent Shipping Industry Review team was released today.
The Review was set up to carry out an inquiry into the future of the New Zealand shipping industry and to make strategic recommendations to Government.
"The challenge faced by the review team was to steer a course for increased participation by the New Zealand shipping industry that would secure and enhance the existing coastal shipping infrastructure while allowing shippers continued access to a competitive range of shipping services," review chairman Ian Mackay said today.
"The review team included representatives of the major interests in the industry. In addition to the expertise of the team members, the team was pleased to receive 83 submissions and presentations which allowed us to draw broadly on the experience, skills and ideas of the industry."
Mr Mackay said the team was able to reach broad consensus on the conclusions and the strategic recommendations to be made to Government.
"The review supports the need for a sustainable New Zealand domestic shipping industry that is competitive in costs and services and applies best practice in its operations. With this in mind, we considered the possible options and from them developed the proposals, which we have set out, and we believe they will increase New Zealand's participation in shipping."
"I understand that the recommendations will now be considered by a Ministerial Committee and I look forward to Government's response."
