Hon Dover Samuels
Minister of Maori Affairs
The quality of government programmes, services and outcomes for Maori will be audited by the Ministry of Maori Development, Te Puni Kokiri to ensure funding for Maori programmes goes to where it is most needed.
Te Puni Kokiri will receive extra funding this year to carry out effectiveness audits of selected government agencies.
Te Puni Kokiri will receive additional capital funding of $200,000 in the coming year. It will receive increased operating funding of $2.175 million in 2000/01, $3.031 million in 2001/02, $3.116 million in 2002/03 and $3.314 million in 2003/04. This money is to fund an effectiveness audit function.
"The increased budget for Te Puni Kokiri shows that the Government is serious about Closing the Gaps," Maori Affairs Minister Dover Samuels said.
"Effectiveness audits will help to make sure Government funding reaches its destination and delivers a service to Maori where it is most needed, in heath care, employment, housing and education.
"Effectiveness audits will provide the Government with a blueprint. Without a map, policy initiatives risk becoming just a good intention."
