Simon Upton has been an MP since he won selection as the National party candidate for the Waikato electorate, aged 23.
Boundary changes mean he has represented the Raglan electorate since 1984. Mr Upton was educated at Southwell School and St Paul's Collegiate in Hamilton. Subsequently he took degrees in English and Law from the University of Auckland and an M.Litt in political philosophy from Oxford University.
Mr Upton is a Rhodes Scholar.
When the National Government was elected in 1990 Mr Upton joined the Cabinet as Minister of Health, Minister for the Environment and Minister of Research, Science and Technology.
At the time of the 1993 election he was Minister for Crown Research Institutes, Minister of Research, Science and Technology and Associate Minister of Finance.
After the 1993 election, Mr Upton was appointed to the Environment, Crown Research Institutes and Research, Science and Technology portfolios.Mr Upton has long-established interests in geology and botany, is a keen skier and an enthusiastic gardener on his Ngaruawahia property.
Mr Upton is married to Bhaady Miller and they have a son.
