PRESS RELEASE
1 October 1996
EMBARGOED UNTIL: 11.30 AM
Prime Minister, Jim Bolger
The Prime Minister, Rt Hon Jim Bolger, today announced a nation-wide information and advisory service for older people.
An Age Wise information database will be established which will operate throughout New Zealand via 500 community outlets and free phone access.
Mr Bolger said the Government would put $500,000 into this programme to set it up and an additional $100,000 each year to update the database.
The Comprehensive Information and Advice Service for Older People programme is designed to help older people retain their independence.
Said Mr Bolger: "It will ensure they can be aware of and have access to the services they require to stay independent within the community."
The idea for the programme arose during the Age Wise Conference.
"This project has been the subject of an extensive feasibility study commissioned by New Zealand Community Funding Agency which has shown it has real benefits to offer."
The service, which will be contracted out by the New Zealand Community Funding Agency, will also provide a valuable new launching pad for other community service developments aimed at assisting older people.
The programme will start next January.
