Peter Gresham was born in Geraldine and attended Geraldine primary school and St Kevin's College, Oamaru. He gained accountancy qualifications by correspondence.

He has been a practising chartered accountant in Waverley since 1964 and has chaired a number of companies and partnerships involved in forestry and horticulture. He is chairman of the Wanganui Forest Owners Association and former Director of Waitotara Meat Marketing Limited. He was Director of Petrocorp from 1980 to 1985.

Mr Gresham joined the National Party in 1960 and has served in numerous positions including party vice president from 1986-88.

He is a Justice of the Peace and involved in Jaycees, church groups, school committees and sports clubs. He played rugby and enjoys cricket, golf and tennis.

He is married with six children.
