Ngai Tahu and Crown resume negotiations
The Minister in Charge of Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, Hon D.A.M. Graham, and the Chairman of he Ngai Tahu Negotiating Group, Sir Tipene ORegan, today announced that the parties had resumed negotiations on the tribes historical land claim.
'Both parties are looking forward to concluding a fair and durable settlement,' they said. Sir Tipene expressed great satisfaction at the decision to resume negotiations.
'There is a clear wish within our people to achieve a negotiated outcome rather than one ground out in a climate of confrontation,' he said.
Mr Graham said the decision by Ngai Tahu and the Crown to resume negotiations was very welcome.
'Ngai Tahu members have waited a long time for a full and final settlement of their claim and I'm delightedwith our decision to resume the negotiations,' he said.
