PRESS RELEASE
28 August 1996
Hon D.A.M. Graham, Minister of Justice
The Justice Sector Information Strategy, launched tonight by the Minister of Justice, The Hon D.A.M. Graham, looks to be a world first in providing a framework for planning and developing information management processes across a justice sector.
The strategy encourages a common approach among justice sector agencies in key areas such as data definition and protocols for inter-computer communications.
'This assists appropriate information sharing, while still allowing individual agencies to develop individual solutions to their operational requirements,' he said.
Mr Graham said there were no obvious precedents for such a strategy in any other justice sector.
'Other countries have expressed considerable interest in the concept and are likely to explore our strategy further as they try to maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of their equivalent agencies.'
While one of the intentions of the strategy is to make information sharing a more cost effective and efficient process, Mr Graham emphasised that it pays particular attention to the requirements of privacy and confidentiality.
The strategy has been a collaborative project involving the Ministry of Justice, Department for Courts, Department of Corrections, NZ Police, Ministry of Transport and the Department of Social Welfare.
Associated agencies including Statistics NZ and the Privacy Commissioner were also involved.
